Public sector undertakings under the Steel Ministry, including iron ore miner NMDC and steel giant SAIL, today contributed Rs 5.5 crore for relief measures in the flood-ravaged Uttarakhand region.
"The PSUs under the Ministry of Steel handed over a cheque of Rs 5 crore to Minister of Steel, Beni Prasad Verma towards Chief Minister's Relief Fund, Uttarakhand, for the relief of those affected by cloud burst and extensive floods in the state," an official statement said.
In addition, KIOCL, another PSU under the Ministry contributed a total of Rs 50 lakh comprising, one day salary of KIOCL employees of Rs 24 lakh and Rs 26 lakh from its own funds, the statement said.
The largest share of the funds contributed by the PSUs under administrative control of the Steel Ministry came from iron ore miner NMDC which provided Rs 2.5 crore for the purpose followed by Steel Authority, which contributed Rs one crore to the Fund.
Both Rashtriya Ispat and MOIL contributed Rs 75 lakh for the relief work in Uttarakhand, devastated by natural calamity.
The statement said while expressing grief over loss of precious lives in the state, Steel Minister Verma said the "Nation and the Ministry of Steel in particular stand with the people of Uttarakhand in their difficult times."
He assured continued support and assistance to the state towards the relief and rehabilitation of the flood affected people.
The contributions made today are in addition to other CSR and sustainability activities to be undertaken by the Central Public Sector Enterprises under the Ministry of Steel in the calamity affected areas.
