The Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC) on Tuesday seized and destroyed about 17,000 kg mangoes from a local trader, who used the banned calcium carbide for ripening the fruit. The civic body has claimed that it was the biggest raid in Gujarat.

The seizure and destruction by the civic body's health department were based on a tip-off about two trucks to be unloaded at Sadar Bazaar area with calcium carbide mixed mangoes, following which, officials raided the godown and seized about 17,000 kg of mangoes.

Deputy health officer Pankaj Rathod said, "We received information that Bharat Fruits, which has a godown in Sadar Bazaar area, is ripening mangos using banned calcium carbide. We raided the godown and caught the mangoes and banned chemical from there."
