Ukraine's second biggest city, Kharkiv, suffered heavy bombardment on Wednesday as Russia's week-long invasion was denounced by the United Nations in a historic vote and dozens of countries referred Moscow to be probed for potential war crimes.
 
The biggest attack on a European state since 1945 has caused over 870,000 people to flee, led to a barrage of economic measures against Russia, and stoked fears of wider conflict in the West unthought-of for decades. The incursion has yet to overthrow the government in Kyiv but thousands are thought to have died or been injured and it could cause another deep hit to the global economy still emerging from the coronavirus pandemic. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, a five-time former Lok Sabha MP, is contesting his first assembly election from the Gorakhpur urban constituency. “There is a wave in support of the BJP across the state. The BJP has taken a decisive lead over its rival political parties in the four phases of the polls held so far,” he said at a rally Saturday.

Adityanath’s Gorakhpur district votes today

UP districts which will vote on Thursday include Gorakhpur, Ambedkarnagar, Balrampur, Siddharthnagar, Basti, Sant Kabir Nagar, Maharajganj, Kushinagar, Deoria and Ballia. Gorakhpur is Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s home district where the BJP won eight seats in 2017 when it came to power in the state with a tally of 312 seats.
