The Supreme Court on Thursday removed CBI director Ranjit Sinha from the investigation into the 2G spectrum allocation scam.
Prima facie it appears that there is credibility in the allegations levelled against CBI chief Sinha, the SC said, referring to charges that he was helping the 2G accused.
The seniormost officer in the investigating team of the 2G scam will take over the responsibilities of the CBI director in the case, the apex court said.
A bench headed by Chief Justice H L Dattu, however, refused to pass an elaborate order on the issue saying that it would "tarnish" the "image and reputation" of the premier agency.
Earlier in the day, Special Public Prosecutor Anand Grover told the Supreme Court that CBI director Ranjit Sinha interfered in 2G case which is "completely inconsistent with the agency's stand," adding that "our case in 2G could have been demolished if Sinha's stand was accepted.".
The CBI chief's role was criticised by Grover and counsel appearing for CBI, K K Venugopal, also raised questions on Sinha naming a senior IPS officer as mole in the team.
The apex court also recalled its earlier order by which it directed the NGO to disclose the name of whistleblower who had provided documents and visitors diary of Sinha's residence.
The apex court took strong exception to CBI officers present in the court room, directing them to leave and "do their duty" in office.
