After developing four lighthouses in Tamil Nadu and Kerala, the shipping ministry and the Directorate General of Lighthouses and Lightships (DGLL) are planning to develop 78 lighthouses across the country as centres of tourism under the public-private partnership (PPP) model. The land adjacent to these lighthouses could be used to set up hotels, resorts, maritime and heritage museums, adventure sports facilities, thematic restaurants, souvenir shops, spa and rejuvenation centres and amphitheatres, subject to viability and necessary clearances.
The DGLL has already invited requests for qualifications for eight lighthouses at Aguada (Goa), Chandrabhaga (Odisha), Mahabalipuram, Kanya Kumari and Muttom (Tamil Nadu), Kadalur Point (Kerala), Kanhoji Angre and Sunk Rock (Maharashtra) and Minicoy (Lakshadweep). It has also issued expressions of interest for another 70 lighthouses. India has 189 lighthouses dotting its coastline of 7,517 km, including the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in the Bay of Bengal and Lakshadweep Islands in the Arabian Sea.
