Speaker suspends 20 Telangana MLAs from House

BS Reporter Chennai/ Hyderabad
About 20 MLAs, including 16 from the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), were suspended for two days from the Andhra Pradesh legislative Assembly after they stalled the proceedings demanding a resolution on a separate statehood for Telangana.

The move came after a loss of a complete week by similar protests after the Assembly re-convened on June 10. Among those suspended by the Speaker were three members from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

It may be recalled that the state government has lined up two Bills, on the SC, ST sub-plan in a general Budget and for introducing a financial benefit scheme for girl child with a view to reap popular support in the general elections due in 2014.

As the present Assembly sessions are going to end on June 21, the government is in a rush to get the official business done, including the passing of the two Bills and the passing of the appropriation Bill scheduled to be taken up on the last day.

With only three days left for the debate and the approval of these Bills, finance minister Anam Ramanarayana Reddy moved the motion for suspension of these members. The girl child benefit scheme, which has been approved by the state Cabinet on Monday, is expected to be introduced in the House tomorrow.
