With the United Kingdom voting to be 'out', with respect to the education sector, there would be a mixed impact for students travelling to UK from India. While due to the UK currency pound falling in comparison to the Indian rupee may mean cheaper education for Indians, it is anticipated that immigration norms would be further tightened making it more difficult for Indian students wishing to stay back post their degree to look for employment opportunities.
Naveen Chopra, founder and chairman of The Chopras which is an overseas education consultant said that in the short term, students would benefit from a cheaper fee. "While students will have an advantage from a cost perspective, it will get tougher for those who have an ambition to work there and take up jobs. Student traffic to UK from India is expected to drop further due to this," he added.
On an average, fee for students in UK can range from £10,000-£ 30,000 every year depending on the course and the institute. This could see some temporary relief till the pound is depreciating. Long term impact of Brexit on overseas student visa norms are still to be seen.
Rohan Ganeriwala, co-founder of study abroad consulting firm Collegify explained that on an immediate basis depending on the level of the UK currency there could be a relief as students usually pay fees by August and September for UK educational institutes. However, he added that cost of living is not expected to go down.
Further, he said that Indian students will have to watch out for the immigration norms that could undergo a change due to Brexit. In UK, for courses six months and below, student visa is provided for one more month after the course. For courses that are one year or above, student visa is for four months after completing education.
