Being an addition to the list of states of India, Telangana has now embarked on the creation of smaller districts that would outnumber those existed in the undivided Andhra Pradesh.
According to a latest government proposal, the number of districts in Telangana will be increased to 27 from the existing 10 districts. This means most of the existing districts will be divided into three smaller units.
This proposal would be discussed at an all-party meeting on Saturday, before being placed before the state Cabinet for a formal approval. After taking the public's feedback, the government will then issue final notification on the formation of new districts. The government wants new districts to be in place by October this year.
An exercise to create new districts was initiated by Chief Minister K Chandrasekhara Rao almost a year ago.
The administrative exercise on the proposed districts was recently culminated into a couple of rounds of conferences with district collectors, who had given their feedback on the number and contours of the proposed districts. The number that was discussed in those meetings was 24, one district more compared to the 23 districts that existed in the undivided AP.
However, this number has been further increased to 27 by the chief minister at a latest meeting based on a Cabinet subcommittee report, as well as fresh representations received from public, according to the chief minister's office.
The proposal to create some of these new districts were based on public demand while others were sought to be created on administrative grounds as well as for public convenience.
