Tamil Nadu chief minister O Panneerselvam today said the state government had filed a special leave petition (SPL) in the Supreme Court against the Madras high court order quashing the state's orders for setting up anti-land grab police cells and special courts.

"A special leave petition against the high court's order has been filed in the Supreme Court on Tuesday," the chief Minister told the state Assembly today.

The chief minister said according to the Madras high court order, the government-ordered anti-land grab police cells cannot function as a separate unit.

The high court order does not signify the Rs 2,354 crore worth of land that had been restored to the original owners, he said.

The chief minister said the government had registered 2,838 land grab cases and 2,905 persons had been arrested till December 31, 2014.
