The Tamil Nadu police today urged Information Technology (IT) vendors not to look at the size of the contract, but the impact it makes on society while considering participation in bids.
Speaking at the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII's) Third Edition of Annual Mobile Conference 2014, Vinit Dev Wankhede, Inspector General of Police - Technical Services, said, "My request to the industry here is that please don't ignore us, the size of the project may be small, but the impact it makes is big."
The department has lined up several initiatives, including creating a closed user group, which will bring around 110,000 policemen into the network. Besides, the families of these policemen could also be brought under the group on conditions. This would would increase the members in the group to 700,000-800,000 users. This will be the largest such group in the world, he said.

The use of advanced technology would help the department improve crime detection and enactment activities.
For instance, the system integration would help the officials cross check the file of an accused with any case registered on him/her in any of the police stations across the state. A video uplink system would help the officials in remote monitoring and management of any situation.
He added the department had also appointed a team of technology experts to develop mobile applications to improve performance of the police force.
There were also efforts to control cyber crime.
