TN urges Centre not to permit dams on Cauvery, Pambar

The state Assembly today passed a resolution in this regard

The Tamil Nadu government has asked the Centre not to permit any dam project across river Cauvery in Karnataka and river Pambar in Kerala. The state Assembly today passed a resolution in this regard.

It also urged the Centre to set up the Cauvery Management Board and Cauvery Water Regulation Committee immediately so that it gets its share of the river water monthly.

 In another resolution, it urged the Centre to take steps to secure the release of 38 fishermen jailed in Sri Lanka and the 79 fishing boats impounded by the island nation.

The resolution also thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Centre for securing the release of five fishermen from the state sentenced to death by a Lankan court.  The resolution also urged the central government to take steps to recover the Katchatheevu islet transferred to Sri Lanka.
 
State blames UPA govt for the fate of Nokia India
The AIADMK-government in Tamil Nadu today has said the previous Congress-led UPA government at the Centre and its partner, the DMK, were solely responsible for the plight of Nokia India's facility in Sriperumbudur.

Speaking in the Assembly today, P Thangamani, state minister for industries, said, "The foremost reason for the closure of Nokia India is the UPA government and its partner DMK. Global device manufacturer Nokia has recently decided to suspend operations at the Sriperumbudur factory, which was freezed by the I-T department, and was slapped around Rs 21,000 crore tax demand. The Tamil Nadu government too has also slapped a Rs 2,400 crore sales tax notice on the company, which could not transfer this factory to Microsoft due to the tax issues.

Around 8,000 workers, including 60 per cent of them women, and another 21,000 indirectly workers had lost their jobs.
