Special two-day session of Maha Assembly from July 3 instead July 2

A special two-day session of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly will commence here from July 3, officials said on Friday.
 
A communique issued by the state legislature secretariat to the members of the assembly said the election to the post of the Speaker of the House will be held on July 3. Nominations for the post will be accepted till 12 noon on July 2.
 
During the cabinet meeting held on Thursday chaired for the first time by Eknath Shinde, soon after he took over as the new chief minister of the state, it was decided that the special session of the assembly will be held on July 2 and 3. However, the dates have been rescheduled.
 
A trust vote is also likely to be held during the session.

US FDA okays for Covid booster targeting Omicron BA.4 & BA.5 variants

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recommended vaccine manufacturers to develop booster shots against Covid-19 targeting Omicron BA.4 and BA.5 variants. While currently available vaccines have helped reduce hospitalisation and death caused by Covid, results from several observational studies have shown that effectiveness of primary vaccination wanes over time against certain variants, including Omicron.
 
The Omicron BA.4 and BA.5 variants, currently driving the fresh wave of Covid cases globally, are known to evade vaccine induced immunity.

6.0-magnitude quake jolts Philippines

An earthquake measuring 6.0 on the Richter scale jolted Cagayan province in northern Philippines on Friday, authorities said. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said the quake, which occurred at 2.40 a.m., hit at a depth of 27 km, about 27 km southeast of Dalupiri Island in Calayan town, reports Xinhua news agency. The tremor was also felt in nearby provinces, including Apayao and Ilocos Sur on the main Luzon island.

Sisodia chairs meeting with officials on waterlogging situation in Delhi

Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia chaired a meeting with the officials concerned on Thursday to take stock of the waterlogging situation after the first monsoon rains hit the national capital.
 
Speaking on the occasion, he said, "On Thursday, the first day of the onset of monsoon in Delhi, the entire city received heavy rains for hours but due to the alertness of the officials of PWD, MCD, Irrigation and Food Control Department, Revenue Department, the people of Delhi did not face the monsoon mayhem."
 
The Deputy Chief Minister said, "Out of 7 key spots which have emerged as severe water logging areas till last year, 6 places did not face any problem this year. These 6 locations are opposite ITO-WHO Building, Minto Bridge, Zakhira Underpass, Jahangirpuri Metro Station Road, Karala Kanjhawala Road, and Loni Roundabout. All these 6 places used to have severe waterlogging for many years but due to the steps taken in the last one year and with the officials from the PWD and other agencies keeping a close watch in the last 4-5 months, the problem of water logging was solved.''

Nadda likely to reach Hyderabad today, BJP plans mega roadshow

With Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) holding the National Executive meeting in Hyderabad this weekend, the party's national president JP Nadda is expected to arrive in the Telanagana's capital on Friday.
 
Delegates have begun arriving in Hyderabad for the BJP National Executive meeting that is scheduled to be held on July 2- 3 at the Hyderabad International Convention Centre.
 
According to party sources, the state unit has planned a mega roadshow to welcome Nadda and preparations are in place for the roadshow that stretches for about one kilometre from the Hyderabad International Airport at Shamshabad.
