Two million enrolled under Centre's social security schemes in Odisha

The natural calamity prone states will be immensely benefited from the schemes

Social security schemes launched by the Union government have elicited a good response in the state with about two million enrolments under the insurance schemes- Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana(PMSBY) and PM Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana(PMJJBY) till date.

"About two million people have joined the schemes in the state. Natural calamity prone states will be immensely benefited from the schemes," said Dharmendra Pradhan, Union minister for petroleum and natural gas, at the launching of the schemes here.

Three social security schemes PMSBY, PMJJBY and a pension plan, Atal Pension Yojana (APY) were launched simultaneously in the state at Bhubaneswar, Sambalpur and Berhampur.
 
Coinciding with the national launch of the social security schemes by Prime Minister, Narendra Modi at Kolkata, Odisha Governor, SC Jamir kick started the schemes in the state.

Official data available shows that 1,371,998 people have been enrolled in the state under the PMSBY as on May 8. Similarly, 178,105 persons have registered their names in PMJJBY scheme.

Under PMSBY, the risk coverage will be Rs 2 lakh for accidental death and full disability and Rs 1 lakh for partial disability. The scheme is available to people in the age group of 18 to 70 years having bank accounts, from where the premium would be collected through "auto-debit" mode. The annual premium is Rs 12 per subscriber. PMJJBY offers life Insurance coverage of Rs two lakh for any savings bank holders in the age group of 18-50 years on payment of Rs 330 per year. This scheme is offered through LIC of India or other Life insurance companies that are willing to offer life coverage on similar terms.

APY, on the other hand, ensures fixed monthly pension of Rs 1,000, Rs 2,000, Rs 3,000, Rs 4,000, Rs 5,000 to subscribers on attaining the age of 60 years, depending on their contributions, which itself would vary according to the age of joining the scheme. The minimum age of joining APY is 18 years and maximum age is 40 years. The minimum period of contribution by any subscriber under APY would be 20 years or more. "The launching of the new schemes would substantially boost the efforts towards ensuring 100 per cent financial inclusion," said chief secretary GC Pati on the occasion.
