Days after a Uber driver was arrested for allegedly raping a female passenger in Delhi, the Maharashtra government has decided to ban web based taxi service in the state.
"We have issued orders to the Transport commissioner to stop the services of web based portals. He will take the required action immediately. Since the government has issued ban orders, it is only a matter of time before the order is implemented by the transport commissioner," transport Secretary S K Sharma said.
Sharma said that the ban comes after the state received the Central government's "advise" to ban all web based taxi services.
"We have taken the decision to ban web based taxi services like Ola and Uber after due consideration," Sharma said.
Following its ban in New Delhi after a passenger was allegedly raped by a Uber driver, the online cab service had been deemed illegal in Hyderabad as well.
