Under fire from all quarters, UP govt recommends CBI probe

State had earlier resisted demands for probe from several quarters including Mayawati and instead ordered compensation to victim's family

The horrific rape and murder of two Dalit girls in Badaun has put the Samajwadi Party led Uttar Pradesh government on the backfoot, compelling it to recommend a CBI probe into the incident. The UP government had initially resisted demands for a probe from several quarters including that from BSP supremo and former state chief minister Mayawati and instead ordered compensation of Rs five lakh to the victim' family and constituted a fast track court. Rejecting platitudes like monetary compensation, Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi who visited Badaun and met the families today criticised the Akhilesh Yadav government and supported the families demand for a CBI inquiry.

The family of the two teenage girls whose bodies were found hanging from a tree, have demanded a CBI probe into the incident saying they had no faith in local police which they alleged were "hand in glove" with the accused.

Significantly, till yesterday Congress had refrained to go all out against the SP government ( it used to render outside support to the former UPA government) but Rahul Gandhi came down heavily upon the UP government today. He was accompanied by AICC general secretary incharge of Uttar Pradesh Madhusudan Mistry, state PCC chief Nirmal Khatri and chairman of AICC Scheduled Castes department K Raju.

Apart from Gandhi, a team of National Commission for Women (NCW) who had visited the families had also blamed the local police.

The bodies of the two girls were found hanging on May 28 after they had gone missing the previous day. Two police constables named in the FIR Sarvesh Yadav and Chhatrapal Yadav, their services have been terminated while sub-inspector Ram Vilas Yadav had been suspended.

Three brothers Pappu Yadav, Awadhesh Yadav and Urvesh Yadav who have also have been named in the FIR have been arrested.
