3,600 illicit arms units busted, 3,300 cartridges confiscated.
In run up to the 2012 Uttar Pradesh Assembly poll, about 1,100 first information reports (FIRs) have been lodged over model code of conduct violations across the state.
Besides, 3,600 illicit arms units had been raided and sealed as part of the drive by police to ensure peaceful election process. About 2,000 illegal arms and 3,300 cartrides have so far been confiscated.
Meanwhile, 1.42 lakh licensed arms had been either been deposited with district authorities or their licenses cancelled. Non-bailable warrants had been issued against more than 6,200 persons.
Under the EC directives for holding free and fair elections, about 39,000 cases of violation of the model code had come to light in the state pertaining to wall writing, posters, banners and other canvassing material.
The excise department has so far confiscated about 1.12 lakh litres of illicit liquor, including Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL), country liquor and beer. UP Police and authorities had so far seized about Rs 40 crore in cash in UP since the poll dates had been announced by the Election Commission (EC). The matters are being investigated. The swoop down by the police and authorities to check use of black money in poll had prompted traders to protest their alleged high handedness in harassment of genuine traders carrying cash.

According to the directives, carrying of cash above one lakh rupees would require possession of valid documents to show the source of money.
The traders have demanded that possession of cash till Rs 5 lakh be exempt from the directive, since many traders carried cash as part of their normal business routine. They had also submitted a memorandum to the EC through the respective district authorities.
The process of filing nominations for phase-I in UP polling had started yesterday. UP would witness polling in seven phases viz February 8, 11, 15, 19, 23, 28 and March 3.
