The Uttar Pradesh government is working towards opening adult literacy centres in areas, inhabited primarily by the Muslim community, of the state.
The Lok Shiksha Kendra (Adult Education Centre) would be opened in village panchayats, having more than 30 per cent Muslim population. In state’s 18 districts with Muslim majority, the government would also implement ‘Talim-e-balinga’ scheme and distribute basic Urdu books to beneficiaries.
The government targets to make almost a million Muslims literate during 2014-15 financial year.

Chairing a meeting of State Literacy Mission here, UP Chief Secretary Alok Ranjan directed officials to spread public awareness and launch an effective campaign on women literacy.
So far, 8.33 million illiterates had been identified in Uttar Pradesh to be benefitted by the literacy programme. He said the remaining potential beneficiaries should also be identified soon and covered under literacy drive.
Till now, 2.9 million people had passed literacy examination in the state and another four million would take the examination in February 2015.
Referring to comparatively lower literacy in nine districts, including Shravasti, Bahraich, Balrampur, Badaun, Rampur, Gonda and Siddharthnagar, among others, Ranjan directed for taking special measures under Sakshar Bharat Abhiyan.
Meanwhile, roadways buses would be used for adult literacy publicity with posters and slogans.
