The BJP is currently ruling in 14 states besides being a coalition partner in Bihar and Jammu & Kashmir where it has its deputy Chief Ministers.

 

A three-page note on "One Nation-One Election" had been sent asking the Chief Ministers to form committees under the leadership of a senior leader either from government or organisation so that the issue can gain momentum in public discourse.
 

The sources said session for devising strategies to win 120 Lok Sabha seats, which the BJP has never won, had been held.

This is the first time Sukhla will be trying his luck in electoral politics. Also, interestingly, it is for the first time in over three decades that the BJP has picked someone from outside the Gorakhnath temple to vie for the Gorakhpur Lok Sabha seat. For the past 29 years, Gorakhpur has been represented in the Lok Sabha by head priests of the Gorakhnath temple.
 

Traditionally, the chief mahant of Gorakhnath temple contests from the Gorakhpur Lok Sabha seat. But, Shukla, with his stature and grip over the regional politics, seemed a reasonable choice when the BJP high command this time chose to look outside the temple for a candidate. 
 

With his undying belief in the party's ideology, Shukla was instrumental in securing huge victories for the party in the Purvanchal region during the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections of last year.

Recap of Uttar Pradesh bypoll results 2018

Candidates of the ruling BJP were trailing in Gorakhpur bypolls and Phulpur bypolls constituencies after several rounds of counting for the parliamentary by-elections, officials said.

 

In the prestigious Gorakhpur Lok Sabha seat, the bastion of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, BJP's Upendra Dutt Shukla was trailing behind Praveen Nishad of the SP by a margin of 10,598 votes.

 

Gorakhpur district magistrate Rajeev Rautela, who is also the returning officer, announced the margin after the eighth round of counting.
 

In Phulpur, SP candidate Nagendra Pratap Singh Patel increased his lead by 15,713 votes after the 11th round of counting, officials said.

 

The SP candidate was leading over BJP candidate Kaushalendra Patel, while independent Atiq Ahmed was at the third spot.

Recap of Bihar bypolls 2018

The ruling BJP-led NDA was leading in the Araria Lok Sabha and Bhabua assembly by-elections while the opposition RJD was ahead in the Jahanabad assembly bypoll on Wednesday.
 

After three hours of counting of votes, the candidates of the Grand Alliance of the Rashtriya Janata Dal, Congress and Hindustani Awam Morcha (HAM) were trailing in two seats.

 

In Araria, the Bharatiya Janata Party's candidate Pradip Kumar Singh was leading by 8,979 votes over RJD candidate Sarfaraz Alam.

 

In Bhabua, the BJP's Rinki Pandey was leading by 3,252 votes over the Congress' Sambhu Patel.

 

In Jahanabad, the RJD's Suday Yadav was leading by 15,000 votes over the Janata Dal-United's Abhiram Sharma.

Gorakhpur bypolls 2018: 'Murder of democray'

The trends had an echo in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly, when the Leader of the Opposition Ram Gobind Chaudhary pointed out to the Chair that media persons were being barred from entering the counting centre in Gorakhpur, and described it as "murder of democracy".
 

 

Amid uproarious scenes created by a jubilant SP members, Speaker Hriday Narayan Dixit adjourned the House briefly.
