Veteran CPI(M) leader Umanath passes away

He was 93 and is survived by two daughters, one an advocate and another a party functionary

Veteran CPI(M) leader and former MP R Umanath passed away at a private hospital here today due to age-related illness.

He was 93 and is survived by two daughters, one an advocate and another a party functionary. His wife had predeceased him.

Umanath, a former CPI(M) Politburo member was firmly opposed to the LTTE and creation of a separate 'Eelam' (homeland) for Tamils in Sri Lanka.

He was an MP representing Pudukottai from 1962 to 1965 and an MLA from Nagapattinam during 1977-80.

Umanath was also former vice president of Centre of Indian Trade Union (CITU) and former state secretary of CPI(M).
