The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has tagged a three-year-old death case, considered part of the Vyapam scam, of medical student Namrata Damor as one of murder. It registered a case in this regard on Friday against unknown persons.
The investigating agency also started a preliminary inquiry into TV journalist Akshay Singh’s death. So far it has registered eight First Information Reports (FIRs) in the scam.

Damor’s body was found by the railway tracks near the temple town of Ujjain in January 2012. An autopsy pointed to homicide but it was held to be an accidental death. She allegedly took an unfair route to get admission in Gwalior Medical College. She was believed to be a key link in the scam. Akshay Singh died on the 5th of this month in Meghnagar of Jhabua district under mysterious circumstances. He was trying to do a story on the death of Damor.
CBI also registered two more cases. The first was on charges of impersonation and fraud against one person. The second was on similar charges against four others for illegalities in the pre-medical test entrance examination.
The Damor case was closed much before the formal Vyapam scam probe, which began in August 2013. In her case, an initial panel of three doctors had said it was death by strangulation leading to “violent asphyxia” but a forensic analyst concluded it was a case of suicide.
She was reported missing on January 2, 2012, and her body was found five days after.
