Meghna Pandey, wife of Vyapam scam whistleblower Prashant Pandey, was detained by Indore police on Saturday evening for alleged possession of “Hawala” money of Rs 9.96 lakh.

The money was seized from her under section 102 of Criminal procedure code, however police later released her.

Her husband flayed the police action and charges and said his family was being harassed by the state government authorities after the Supreme Court had ordered CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation) probe into Vyapam scam and incidences of “mysterious death” allegedly linked to it. Meghna works as an HR (Human Resource) manager at a private firm and Indore.

Acting on a tip-off, a well-placed police source said, local police kept a vigil and noticed that she (Meghna) was coming out of her office with a bag. The police searched her bag and found currency of Rs 9.96 lakh.

The police source further said she could not give a satisfactory answer for possession of such heavy amount cash. The police had informed Income Tax Department for further probe. The police was also investigating the matter, the source said.

However Pandey clarified that money seized was her family’s own hard-earned money and alleged his entire family was being harassed. The money, according to Pandey, was to be paid to a builder to book a flat.

Prashant Pandey is one of the whistleblowers in the Vyapam scam. Earlier he extended a helping hand to police in cracking various IT related crimes. But later raised the issue of Vyapam that pertains to rigging of entrance examination for recruitment and professional courses conducted by the Madhya Pradesh Professional Examination Board (Vyapam).
