'Suspension of work' was declared in two tea estates of Alipurduar district today rendering 4,500 workers unemployed.
Union sources said work suspension was declared at Kalchini and Raymmatan tea gardens citing financial constraints.
However, most trade unions, including the United Trade Union Congress (UTUC), Indian National Trinamool Trade Union Congress (INTTUC), Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC) and Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), have rubbished the claim of the management and said the plantations had adequate cash flow to run the gardens.
The workers were allegedly not getting drinking water for the past three days, the unions said.
Management in both the tea gardens have confirmed the closure but efforts towards resuming operations were underway.
