Customs official on Monday morning arrested a woman with unaccounted gold worth Rs 15.88 lakh from the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International (SVPI) Airport, Ahmedabad.
Sources said officers of Air Intelligence Unit (AIU), Customs, arrested one Jaibunisa Mohammed Yusuf, an international passenger who landed in Ahmedabad on Monday morning from Sharjah on an Air Arabia flight, for carrying unaccounted gold weighing 600 grams into the country. Value of the gold was estimated at Rs 15.88 lakh.
The gold, sources stated, was concealed in her trolley bag wheels, trolley handle and two brassieres (lying in her trolley bag). Further investigation is on.
Illegal import of gold into the country has risen after August 2013 when the Centre raised import duty on the yellow metal to 10 per cent to arrest its imports, which was responsible for spurt in the country’s Current Account Deficit (CAD).
