The World Bank has given Andhra Pradesh "a very positive indication" of support under its Adoptable Lending Programme for the $1 billion loan the state has sought for power sector restructuring.

Andhra Pradesh State Electricity Board chairman J Parthasarathy said an appraisal team from the World Bank discussed the loan components last week.

Besides carrying out talks on this loan, the World Bank cleared 15 international competition bids floated in the post-sanctions period to procure material for the first $150 million instalment, which will be released by the year-end.

It will be utilised mainly to strengthen the transmission system by improving voltage and reducing transmission losses.

Parthasarathi told mediapersons last evening that the final appraisal for the $1 billion loan would be completed in two months. After that, the proposal will be forwarded to the World Bank board.

He said the $1 billion would be released through five loans.
