Close to one third of the nation's automobile component requirements are fulfiled by Tamil Nadu which is emerging as a major manufacturing hub in the South, according to V Balaraman, president, Madras Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI).

"The South, especially Chennai, is more likely to emerge as a manufacturing hub in the country, specialising in the production of machine tools and automobile components," he said while addressing a seminar on 'International Standard in the Automotive Sector'.

Speaking on the occasion, Baskar Kotte, chief executive officer of US-based Quality System Enhancements, said that the practical difficulties in implementing ISO/TS certification lies in understanding the terms and definitions and in perceiving the customer-specific requirements.

Kotte said that ensuring customer satisfaction is crucial to a company's success. "Business is just a goods-selling process. It is a customer satisfactory process. Every company should do a failure mode effects analysis and measurement system analysis to track the customer trend and then translate customer requirements to customer satisfaction," he added.

Relentless pursuit to perfection and knowledge on customer specific requirements with special emphasis on customer-driven engineering alone can lead any automobile company to success, he added.
