The number of new telephone users has gone up by a record 1.5 million in June. Of this, the cellular subscriber base has expanded by 970,000.
Basic operators, riding on the success of WLL limited mobility, have added nearly 500,000 users.
The surge in the cellular subscriber base is due to the drop in outgoing tariffs, free incoming calls and bundled handset offerings.

The previous best for cellular subscriptions was in March 2003, when 930,000 mobile users were added. Basic operators have only recently started adding significant numbers.
With the addition of 970,000 users in June, the total cellular subscriber base has zoomed up 6.8 per cent from 14.17 million in May to 15.14 million.
While Bharti was leading the growth with 270,000 additions in June, BSNL has added 250,000 cellular users.
