Around 11,000 industrial units have shut shop in Uttaranchal. This was stated by a survey conducted by the department of small-scale industries (SSIs).

The survey, conducted early in 2003, says only 16,000 of the 27,000 units surveyed are operational. The rest were either closed or were missing. There are 32,000 units in the hill state of Uttaranchal, the survey points out.

Of the 6,000 units in Dehra Dun, 1,500 have been closed, some of them since quite a few years. The maximum number of closed units were located in Dehra Dun.

In Udham Singh Nagar district, around 1,500 of the total 3,000 units have been closed. Most of these units have shut shop due to different factors, but all of them had become unviable, the survey explained.

Despite reports of a large number of units lying closed, the state government has not taken any visible measure to revive them. However, officials claimed it was looking into the problem of industries becoming sick, particularly the SSIs, by assuring them subsidies.
