Two suicide bombers, including one in the garb of a policeman, today set off powerful blasts in Russia's volatile North Caucasus region of Dagestan, killing at least 11 people and injuring scores, just a couple of days after the terror attacks on Moscow metro claimed 39 lives.

Among the dead in today's attacks in the town of Kizlyar was the local police chief Vitaly Vedernikov, Interfax news agency reported.

The first blast took place at around 8.30 am (10:00 HRS IST) when a car parked on a street near a school and packed with explosives was blown up by its driver.

However, there were no children in the school. Three cars parked nearby were gutted.

As police officers and residents gathered at the scene, there was a second blast half an hour later by a man who was wearing police uniform.

Russian Interior Minister Rashid Nurgaliyev said that 11 people were killed and scores injured in the blasts in Kizlyar.

Authorities have launched investigations into the attacks.

Muslim-dominated Dagestan and other Caucasian regions neighbouring restive Chechnya, have become frequent targets of militant violence directed against the law enforcement agencies.

On Monday, two woman suicide bombers attacked Moscow metro killing 39 people, the worst terror strike in the city in six years which the authorities have linked to militants from the North Caucasus.

Prime Minister Vladimir Putin yesterday ordered security agencies to "scrap out from the bottom of the sewers" those responsible for the underground attacks here.
