15 firms in race for Delhi`s multimodal transport hub

The players include BLS-ILFS consortium, Unity Infraprojects, Lanco Infratech, Nagarjuna Constructions, CMC Constructions, Parasvnath Developers, Zoom Developers, Sun City Projects, Somdutt Builders, Pawha Infrastructure and SMS Infrastructures.

The project, which will be developed on a public-private partnership (PPP) basis at an estimated cost of Rs 400 crore, will be on a BOMM (build-operate-maintain-manage) basis for a period of 40 years. It is expected to be awarded by August 2008.

 

The proposed transit system will be developed over 10.9 hectares near the world class convention centre developed by DLF and IGI International Airport. The Delhi government intends to make this project operational before the 2010 Commonwealth Games.

An official at Delhi Integrated Multi-Modal Transit System Ltd (DIMTS), which is overseeing this project, said: "So far we have got good response from various infrastructure players. The last date for submission of the request-for-qualification (RFQ) is June 23, by which time we are expecting some more players to come in".

This will be the first integrated transit hub in the country that will provide inter-connectivity between multiple modes of public transport like inter-state buses, Delhi metro, and the proposed light rail transit system to be introduced by the Delhi government.

The ISBT is designed in such a way that it can handle 5,000 buses per day. It will have around 175 bays for inter-state buses and around 100 for local buses, besides a single-storey underground parking for buses and cars. The project also envisages the development of a three-star hotel with 300 rooms, besides other passenger amenities like eating stalls, dormitory, drinking water facilities, air-conditioned waiting halls, ATM and bank counters, general merchant stores, department stores and PCOs.

DIMTS officials say once the hub becomes operational, it will decongest the existing traffic from the Kashmere Gate ISBT, and reduce the turnaround time of buses. More importantly, it will also help in reducing the pollution level inside the National Capital Territory as the project will curtail the movement of inter-state buses in the city.
