The incident, apparently caused by a short circuit, took place in Gudabiya area around 2.30 am (5 am IST) when there were 218 people in the camp, mostly Indians, police said. However, workers claimed that there were over 350 Indians in the building.

The seven injured were being treated in a hospital for burns they received in the fire.

Indian Ambassador to Bahrain Balakrishan Shetty told PTI that most of the 16 workers killed were from Tamil Nadu. They worked for Royal Towers Construction.

Most of the workers died as a result of suffocation, he said. The remaining workers, who escaped the fire, have been shifted to a neighbouring gym. PTI
