As many as 1001 villages of Gujarat would be covered under financial inclusion plan by March 2011 and another 2,501 villages by March 2012. According to State Level Bankers' Committee (SLBC), total 3,502 villages in Gujarat having population over 2,000 have been identified by various banks for providing banking services by March 2012.
Up to October 2010, banks have started providing banking services through 13 full-fledged branches, two satellite offices and 135 business correspondents. Government of India initiated the Financial Inclusion Plan in which banks have to cover initially the villages having population over 2,000 which are unbanked for providing banking services at the door-step of villagers through brick and mortar branch, mobile branch, satellite office or business correspondents.
SLBC said that there are about 18.35 lakh farmers yet to be covered under Kisan Credit Card Scheme adding that SLBC chairman A.K. Dutt, Executive Director, Dena Bank, has requested state government to make available the list of uncovered farmers to the banks so that they can cover them under KCC fold.
