Congestion and the overcrowding of markets in downtown Shimla have forced civic authorities to plan shopping complexes at two places in the south of the city.

The town and country planning department (TCP) has prepared a plan to build two commercial centres at Ganahati and Jatia Devi, falling on the Shimla-Bilaspur road, sources in the civic authority said.

The two commercial centres will not only cater to the needs of the suburban area of Ganahati but Shimla's other southern colonies such as Tutu, Jatog, Boalugunj and Summer Hill also.

The plan has been formulated to help residents of the two outskirts areas of Ganahati and Jatia Devi who walk long distances to reach main Shimla for their basic needs.

TCP has also prepared a plan to build residential colonies in these two sunny areas and divide them into sectors, sources in the civic authority said. The private sector will be roped in to build these two residential colonies at Ganahati and Jatia Devi.

The exact cost of these proposed commercial and residential centres is yet unknown.
