4,000MW power plant to come up in K'taka: Shahi

A 4,000 MW, ultra mega power project will be located at Tadri near the coastal town of Karwar in Karnataka, and an expression of intent in this regard is slated to be issued on March 7, union power secretary R V Shahi said today.

Shahi said it would be one of the five ultra mega power projects that would come up in the country with the other four to be set up in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.

These projects are an initiative of the central government in association with the Central Electricity Authority and Power Finance Corporation, he said.

The expression of intent for the Maharashtra project is scheduled to be issued on February 28, Shahi said in his address at a curtain raiser meet for India Electricity - 2006, a three-day internatonal exhibition and conference on the power industry to be held in New Delhi from May 11.

Shahi said he held discussions with Karnataka Power Corporation earlier this  morning, adding that 1,800 acres have already been acquired for the Tadri project. "There is a possibility of acquiring more land," he added.
