In another incident, fierce gunbattle broke out between militants and the security forces in Kalaroos area of border district Kupwara. The battle continued for more than four days. the operation, which concluded yesterday, resulted in the death of eight armymen, including a lieutenant. Also killed in the encounter were two foreign militants belonging to pro-Pak militant group Lashkar-e-Toiba, which is mostly made up of foreigners.
A prominent national Conference worker was gunned down by militants at village Devar in Kupwara district on Sunday night,, while militants abducted a prominent Congress worker at village Dangiwachi in Baramulla district. In yet another gunbattle at Wadwan in Budgam district, seven persons, including three jawans, three militants and a civilian were killed in an encounter between security forces and the militants.
Some houses were also been destroyed in the operation.
One of the militants killed has been identified as an Afghan national while two others are still unidentified.
Three AK-47 rifles, two pistols, one RPG and a large quantity of ammunition was also recovered from the site.
The worker identified as Wali Mohammad is still untraced and a man hunt has been launched by the police to race him. At Reshipora village another National Conference worker was killed by gunmen. The authorities here have further beefed up security for the Assembly candidates following militant attacks on four candidates during last twenty four hours. Authorities say that all candidates have been given Z Plus' security cover.
