Demanding a special package for the small-scale industries (SSI) sector in Rajasthan, the sector's apex body Laghu Udyog Bharti said as many as 70,000 units had turned sick because of the heavy tax burden and changing global scenario.

Like hilly areas, Rajasthan should be considered by the Centre and the state governments as a desert state and the small units be given relief in excise duty and income tax structure, said OP Malhotra, Rajasthan president of the organisation.

About 5,246 items were reserved for the small-scale sector, but after India signed a World Trade Organisation (WTO) agreement in 1994, the number of reserved items allocated to SSIs became just about 1,000, he said.

About 256,000 small-scale units including sick units had survived with an investment of Rs 383 lakh in the state alone, he said.

Malhotra demanded a single-window facility and cut in the industrial loan interest rate from 13 per cent to 8 per cent.

To revive sick units, the Centre and state government should exempt small units from paying purchase tax and stamp duty, he said. He also demanded electricity at cheaper rates for small-scale units.

To focus attention on the problems faced by SSIs, a national conference on 'Challenges before the SSI sector in the era of globalisation' will be held here on June 13.
