The Department of Transport in Abu Dhabi today invited bids from domestic and international consulting firms to conduct a detailed study of its proposed Light Rail Transit (LRT) project in the country.

The study of LRT or Tram project is an integral part of the Surface Transport Master Plan (STMP), a major initiative taken by the department to develop a comprehensive transport infrastructure in the Emirate.

The 340-km tram system, expected to be operational in 2014, is part of 'Plan Abu Dhabi 2030'.

The department will work closely with the selected consultant to assess the feasibility of tram lines and the financial viability for the project; along with models of the initial design of the tram network and stations, vehicle size and technical specifications.

The study will be conducted over a period of 18 months.

With greater capacity, cost and energy efficiency and ability to operate in densely populated areas, the LRT system is expected to become a major means of public transport in the country.

The department was established in 2006 to cover the entire value chain and ensure fully coordinated planning in all aspects of transport policy and development in Abu Dhabi.
