Accidental firing claims admiral

Rear Admiral Satyendra Singh Jamwal, 50, Chief of Staff, Southern Naval Command, died this morning in an accident at the small arms firing range on the base training establishment here, formally known as INS Dronacharya. He got a bullet injury on the head while on routine training and was rushed to a private hospital in the city.

The incident occurred at 10.30 am, according to an official statement. An inquiry has been ordered. He was commissioned in the executive branch of the Indian Navy as a surface warfare officer in 1980 and had specialised in anti-submarine Warfare.

He was an alumnus of Lawrence School, Sanawar;the National Defence Academy;Grechko Naval War College, Russia; Defence Services Staff College, Wellington, and Army War College.

 

Besides various tenures at sea, he had been Director, Naval Operations.He was also a military aide to the President of India from 1983 to 1985. On promotion to the Flag Rank in September 2009, he took over his final charge at Southern Naval Command. Prior to this, he was Naval Attaché at the Indian embassy at Moscow, Russia.

He is survived by his wife, Geeta, and two children.
