If BJP president Rajnath Singh had cited the Gujarat model for the BJP chief ministers to follow as a road map on how to win elections, his party's prime ministerial candidate L K Advani lost no time in citing the Uttar Pradesh elections as an example of how not to fight elections.

On the concluding day of the BJP's national council, Advani struck a cautionary note on the elections in eight Assemblies due this year and the anticipated General Election, urging party members not be "over confident" and complacent.

He termed an honest appraisal of the party's all-time low performance in UP as the most important task for the party.
