A series of advertisements questioning CBI's move to arrest IPS officers in Soharabuddin fake encounter case have appeared in newspapers here, drawing flak from opposition Congress which demanded action against those behind it.
All major Gujarati newspapers of the city carried the advertisements targeting the Congress at the Centre and alleging that it was using CBI as its tool. Numerous posters have been pasted on the walls in different areas of the city raising criticising CBI's actions in the Soharabuddin case.
The advertisements issued in the name of Jan Adhikar Samiti, Vadodara, said, "While terrorists are being allowed to move freely in the country, police officials are being sent behind bars".
The CBI was handed over the investigations of the fake encounter case by the Supreme Court and it had last month arrested IPS officer Abhay Chudasama in the case.
The BJP has accused the Congress at the centre of misusing CBI to defame Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi as the police officer was arrested just before the Golden Jubilee celebrations of the state.
"In the last seven years, there have been 721 encounters in the entire country of which only 17 were in Gujarat. People of the state want to know why an inquiry is being conducted in Gujarat only?," the advertisements said.
It further said, "Why such an hue and cry is being made for Soharabuddin who was an aide of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim and planning terrorist activities in the country".
The identity of those behind the Jan Adhikar Samiti could not be ascertained.
Gujarat PCC president Siddarth Patel said the appearance of such advertisements was a "serious issue" . He demanded that an investigations be launched to find out who was behind the Samiti and that action be taken against them.
"This is an attempt to arouse feelings of people of the state against the country's premier investigating agency CBI and the Centre," Patel said.
"The CBI is conducting inquiry in the case under the supervision of Supreme Court and the Centre has no direct or indirect role to play in it," Patel said in a statement here.
