Emboldened by the resignation of A Raja, Union telecom minister till yesterday, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) said all Opposition parties were together demanding a joint parliamentary committee (JPC) probe on the allegations of corruption in 2G spectrum allocation.

Senior party members said leaders of the parliamentary party met counterparts in their National Democratic Alliance this morning and had collectively decided to continue demanding a JPC.

“There would be no compromise on the demand for a JPC on scams related to 2G spectrum allocation, the Adarsh Society case and the Commonwealth Games. All the Opposition parties are together on this issue,” said S S Ahluwalia, senior BJP leader. He said this party had no problem in agreeing to the demand of Raja’s DMK to have any probe go back to the issue of 2G spectrum licenses since 1999, when the the BJP was in power.

Although it is expected that the government would soon table in Parliament the report of the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) on 2G spectrum allocation and it would be then taken up by the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), chaired by senior BJP leader Murli Manohar Joshi, the Opposition is still insistent on a JPC.

“The PAC doesn’t probe but it only does a post mortem of the report. The JPC will have its own terms of reference and they will be able to thoroughly investigate the scam,” said Ahluwalia.
