The prospective alliance between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) for the coming Assam assembly elections is stuck. There is a clear divide within the regional party on whether to join hands with the BJP or not. Senior members of the BJP informed that although AGP leaders had themselves got in touch with them to form an alliance, the talks couldn’t succeed due to the AGP’s internal problems. “BJP has held talks with senior members of the AGP but they could succeed because their house is not in order. We were interested in forming an alliance but it cannot succeed till the time other party is also keen to join hands,” said a senior member of the BJP who took part in the talks.
