Second shift classes to begin in select institutes.
The privately promoted engineering and management institutes which were bound by student intake constraints due to stringent terms set by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) have a reason to cheer now.
AICTE has introduced a refreshingly new concept of 'second shift' classes wherein institutes with more than six years of operations can offer under graduate and post graduate programmes in engineering, management and pharmacy to additional students.
The second shift classes can run at timings that do not clash with the schedule of the regular students of these institutes.
Apart from having a minimum of six years of experience in delivering technical education, the institutes need to meet the specified parameters in areas like quality of faculty, infrastructure and placements to be considered eligible for running the second shift classes.

It may be noted that as per the prevailing AICTE norms, an engineering institute can start with a maximum intake of 120 students while for institutes with a combination of courses in engineering, management and pharmacy, the maximum permissible intake was 540.
For the 2010-11 academic session, the AICTE has approved an enhanced intake of 1860 for second shift operations in select engineering and management institutes of the state.
The enhance intake of 1860 includes 1080 for the under graduate course in engineering and technology, 54 for post graduate programme in engineering, 660 for management and 60 for pharmacy.
The institutes which have got the AICTE nod for second shift classes are Silicon Institute of Technology, Synergy Institute of Engineering and Technology, C V Raman College of Engineering, Gandhi Institute of Engineering and Technology, Dhaneshwar Rath Institute of Engineering and Management Studies, Koustuv Institute of Self Domain, Regional College of Management and Rajdhani College of Engineering and Management.
