In a letter to the chief minister Subhashini Ali, president, AIDWA, has said that
UP police had betrayed their "patriarchal prejudices, anti-poor bias and insensitivity" in handling the case.
Arushi Talwar, 14, was found murdered in her room while two days later, the body of servant Hemraj was found on the terrace. The police, which had originally suspected Hemraj has now arrested Arushi's father Rajesh Talwar for the murder. The police had alleged that a series of inappropriate relationships had resulted in the murders.
However, AIDWA, the women's wing of the Communist party of India (Marxist), has said the police had been "indulging in the mud-slinging against all those involved including sparing Arushi, who is no longer alive to defend herself."
The letter said that the policemen continued to show their anti-poor bias the way they quickly blamed Hemraj for Arushi's murder.
The AIDWA has blamed the police that to "cover up for their own inefficiencies police officials have regularly used the print and electronic media to make the most outrageous and unsubstantiated allegations against Arushi, her mother and their family friend, Anita Durrani."
"Can this kind of unrestrained character assassination by the police be permitted in a civilised society?" is the question AIDWA has posed to chief minister Mayawati.
The AIDWA has asked Mayawati to "take strict action against all those who have indulged in inappropriate, libellious and atrocious behaviour to send a message to the UP police and to the country as a whole."
