VAT to cover all those items not figuring in exempted list

All the government orders (GOs) issued under the existing AP General Sales Tax Act (APGST) will automatically go off once the Value-Added Tax (VAT) system comes into effect from April 1, 2003.

However, ST returns upto March 31, 2003 will be processed as per APGST and the pending cases will also have to be settled as per APGST, even though it would be repealed from the day the new act comes into effect.

This was clarified today by N S Hariharan, the principal secretary (revenue) of the state government. Participating in an interactive session with the members of the Federation of Andhra Pradesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (Fapcci) on the proposed VAT system, he said any item which was not found in the exempted list would be taxable under VAT.
