Andhra firms fast forward Orissa power projects

With the coal ministry effectively addressing the demand for coal, various Andhra-based companies are working with renewed vigour on their coal-based power projects in Orissa. The ministry has so far sanctioned coal linkages and allotted blocks to support an additional 10,200 Mw capacity in Orissa.
 
In addition to allotting four coal blocks in Orissa""one to NTPC's 3,200-Mw project and three to the proposed ultra mega power project""the coal ministry has offered three more blocks, Mandakini (Talcher), Rampia, and Rampia Dipside in IB Valley, to private players. Many of these companies, including those who have already secured coal linkage, have bid for these captive coal blocks.
 
A total of 13 companies, including national players like Tatas and Essar Power, have signed MoUs with the Orissa government to add 16,000 Mw to the generation capacity. Of this, four Andhra-based companies propose to add 5,160 Mw capacity. While the Lanco group has proposed to set up a 1,320-Mw project, the Navbharat-Malaxmi joint venture is planning to build a 2,240-Mw project. of which the first plant, with a 1,040-Mw capacity, will be built in phase one. The GMR group is working on a 1,000-Mw power plant whereas the KVK/Maytas joint venture has proposed a 600-Mw project.
