Andhra Pradesh chief minister K Rosaiah had written to Union power minister Sushil Kumar Shinde seeking allotment of 500 Mw power from the unallocated share of Central Generating Station for three months to help the state cope with the recent floods.
“Restoration of the 770 Mw Srisailam Right Bank Power Station will take at least four months. This is affecting the kharif crops that have survived the fury of floods. Also, the 500 Mw unit at Vijayawada with a capacity to deliver 12 million units (mu) per day has, in all, delivered just 57 mu from April and is still not operating due to teething problems. It is yet to stabilise to deliver continuous power,” he said.
The demand for power in the state is touching 225 mu a day as farmers are advancing rabi farm activities.
Loss of generation and super imposition of kharif and rabi agricultural operations are causing an unusual spurt in power consumption in Andhra Pradesh, the chief minister said.
The demand in September this year was 215 mu as compared with 191 mu last year, 223 mu in August (186 mu last year) and 212 mu in July (193 mu last year), according to a press release.
