Andhra to form NSG-like elite forces

Andhra Pradesh will set up State Security Guard (SSG) and District Security Guard on the lines of the National Security Guard (NSG), the elite anti-sabotage operations force that rescued several people from the clutches of the terrorists in Mumbai.

Disclosing this to the media after a state cabinet meeting today, State Information and Public Relations Minister Anam Ramnarayana Reddy said the details of the proposed security wing would be finalised shortly.

The state government has asked senior police officers to submit a report in this regard on Monday. “The state police will be also trained to deal with emergencies,” he said.

 

This apart, the Organisation to Counter Terrorist Operations (Octopus), which was formed last year, and the Grey Hounds in the state will be strengthened. The state also decided to set up a Marine Security Force, if needed, apart from revamping the marine police system. “Immediate steps will be taken on all these aspects,” Reddy said.

Andhra Pradesh is the second state after Maharashtra to think about setting up an SSG.
