The city today witnessed a protest rally by representatives of farmers, workers, and service sector employees against the World Trade Organisation (WTO) ministerial summit being held in Hong Kong. They were demanding India's withdrawal from WTO negotiations.

Organised under the banner of Indian People's Campaign Against WTO (IPCAWTO), the rally asked the government not to succumb to the pressure by the US and European Union.

These activists expressed strong reservations against the opening of service and agricultural sector to multinational companies.

"The West has reached a saturation point in their consumption level and investment opportunities have also slimmed down. Now they are looking for new avenues for creating wealth for themselves.," said Gajanan Khatu of the National Alliance of People's Movement.
