The Andhra Pradesh government has set a target of achieving 80 per cent literacy rate from the existing 64 per cent by 2020, D Purandeswari, Minister of State for Human Resource Development, said while launching the Saakshar Bharat programme in the state on the International Literacy Day. India's current adult literacy rate is only 16 per cent.
Saakshar Bharat, a centrally sponsored scheme launched in 19 of the 23 districts in Andhra Pradesh, aims at promoting and strengthening adult education in the country.
