AP launches new housing scheme for urban poor

The Andhra Pradesh government on Monday announced the launch of a new housing scheme, called Rajiv Gruha Kalpa, for urban poor.
 
Chief minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy, speaking at the launch of three new products by Andhra Bank, said, "Under the scheme one lakh families would be provided houses at an estimated cost of Rs 1 lakh per house."
 
Of the total amount, the government would provide Rs 25,000 by way cost of land and utilities, while the balance would be borne by the beneficiary and banks.
 
"The beneficiary will be paying Rs 10,000, and the banks will fund to an extent of Rs 65,000. The scheme has been launched in Hyderabad and Ranga Reddy and we hope to extend it to the 110 municipalities in the state with the assistance from the Union government," he said.
 
Later, Union finance minister P Chidambaram said that he had asked the state government to submit details of the programme, which would be examined by the Finance Ministry.
